Art Deco Carnelian Filigreed Ring, 1920-1935

During the Victorian and Edwardian jewelry periods, the use of precious and semi-precious stones carried specific meanings.

A Carnelian represented friendship in sorrow.  The need for personal meaning in stones carried over into the Art Deco time period, (1920 – 1935) which was right after WW I.  This Art Deco white gold filigreed ring is marked 14k with an unblemished octagonal Carnelian center that is ¼” wide X 6/16” long.  The setting contains delicate leaves.  The ring’s size is 6 1/4.

The artistic style of the Art Deco time period came from L’Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes, an international display of modern decorative arts held in Paris, France in 1925.  Over 400 jewelry firms participated in the exposition showing the new Art Deco jewelry style that was already in full swing by 1925.  The exposition was postponed two times because of WW I.  Three old European mine cut diamonds grace the filigree setting of this stamped 18k white gold ring.  The diamonds are approximately .03c each, H-I in color and I1 in clarity.  A beautiful etched wheat pattern graces the entire band/shank of the ring.  The shoulders of the ring contain bows above molded white gold baguettes.  The ring’s size is 4 ¼.

Art Deco Diamond Dinner Ring

The Art Deco time period, (1920 – 1935) gave us multiple diamonds within a filigreed setting to create a breathtaking dinner ring.  There are three .28c brilliant cut diamonds, SI in clarity and H-I in color with synthetic blue sapphire triangles in the north/south, east/west positions on the marked 18k white gold ring’s top.  Synthetic sapphires were created circa 1877 because few precious stones were being mined during the Grand Period (1860 – 1885) of the Victorian Era.  The use of synthetic sapphires carried over to the time during and after WW I because of shipping and importing wartime limitations.  The length of the ring is 1” and its width is ½”.  The ring’s shoulders contain beautifully etched leaves.  It would make a wonderful pinky ring because of its size, 4.

This is a true example of Queen Alexandra’s love for beautiful jewelry during her husband’s reign, 1901 – 1910.  Queen Alexandra was credited for bringing the Victorians out of mourning during the Aesthetic period, 1885 – 1900, which was the last part of the Victorian Era.  She was very celestial and terrestrial in her thinking and incorporated stars, crescent moons, flowers, and hearts embellished with seed pears in her jewelry designs. This 14k yellow gold ring contains an ovoid piece of nephrite green jade, 5/8” long by 3/16” wide, surrounded by 1 mm seed pearls.  Jade is a symbol of beauty, wisdom and goodness.  The basket setting of the ring adds to its delicate beauty.   The ring size is 6 ½.

White Gold Opal and Diamond Ring

October is the birth month of the opal which is a semi precious stone that was heavily utilized during the Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian periods.  The opal was considered a symbol of hope, innocence, and purity during the Middle Ages.  During the late 18th and 19th centuries, the opal fell out of favor because of its negative connotations found in the book Anne of Geurstein written by Sir Walter Scott.   Queen Victoria helped to reverse the opal’s bad press by wearing them during the Romantic era of her reign.  Opals have been found on all continents except Antarctica.  A good opal should not be backed by a marble piece to enhance its color.  This type of opal is known as a doublet or triplet.

The oval cabochon opal in this 14k white gold ring contains warm opal colors -yellows, reds, oranges, and is 4.33c.  The two diamonds that border the opal are .04c.  This is an exquisite ring for someone who enjoys wearing cocktail rings with larger than life stones.  The stone measures 9/16” long by 1/2'” wide and the ring size is 9 ½.
