Conch Shell Habilles Cameo Pendant

Cameos originated during the neo-classic period and were first worn by men.  These cameos depicted Roman warriors and Roman gods.

Female cameos were carved from the 1840’s to the present day which helps you to date a cameo.  Women wanted a cameo that depicted her era in terms of hair style and clothing.  Cameos are not carved, they are engraved in relief.  Shell cameos were created during the Renaissance, 1400 – 1600, in Naples which is on the west coast of Italy.  The waters off of Naples provided the conch shells and coral for cameo engraving.  Pope Pius XII and Napoleon brought cameos back into vogue by wearing them in the early 1800’s.  Habilles are cameos with diamond jewelry.

This unusual cutout Habilles conch cameo dates to the Aesthetic period of the Victorian Era, 1885 – 1900.  Her hair is bejeweled with a banded agate and she wears a 10k yellow gold diamond pendant around her neck.  The cameo pendant is 1 ¾’” long and 1 ¼” at her shoulders.  She belonged to a descendant of Rueben Atland who owned the Atland House, a tavern/inn in Abbottstown, PA.  Abbottstown is the oldest town in Adams County, PA incorporated in 1753.
